Liturgy (leitourgia) is a Greek word meaning originally a public duty, a service to the state undertaken by a citizen. By extension in our Christian life, liturgy points to the public prayer and life of the Church and our participation in it. Liturgy involves the entire complex of official services, all the rites, ceremonies, prayers, and sacraments of the Church, as opposed to private devotions, and is realized most fully in our principal prayer -- the Sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist, which we call the Mass.
